From left, Shelby Ernst, Kaden Dean, Tori Buechler and McKenzie Dean, of Tipp City, drop off supplies they purchased for the Miami County Animal Shelter Monday. The kids donated the supplies instead of having their annual family Christmas gift exchange this year.
Children from three local families dropped off hundreds of dollars of animal supplies at the Miami County Animal Shelter Monday, just in time to fulfill a new Christmas tradition. The items were purchased by the nine children in the Ernst, Trost and Dean families, who decided this year to buy and donate items for the shelter instead of buying gifts for each other.
The kids (and their ages) are: Logan Ernst (18), Collin Ernst (16), Shelby Ernst (12), Clark Trost (15), Maddie Trost (12), Tori Buechler (11), Myah Trost (23 months), McKenzie Dean (7) and Kaden Dean (3). The children bought about $1,000 worth of items and donated half to the Montgomery County shelter and half to the Miami County shelter. They brought their items, which included dog and cat food, beds and bedding, cleaning supplies and toys for the animals - to the Miami County shelter Monday.
Two-year-old Myah Trost had been looking forward to the trip for days, said her mother, Emily Trost. "She's been carrying (a) bag of cat food around for two days. She couldn't wait," Trost said, as Myah put the cat food bag next to the other items under the small Christmas Tree in the lobby of the shelter Monday. "The kids were the ones who chose to do this for the shelter," Trost said. She said her family had adopted a dog, a four-year-old Golden terrier mix named Buddy, from the shelter about a month ago, so the kids thought about donating back to the shelter. "It was their idea to do something helpful at Christmas instead of receiving gifts," Trost said. "I was definitely happy about the choice to do the animal shelters because of adopting Buddy from (the) Troy (shelter) recently."
Animal Control officer Jnyne Higgins said the shelter welcomed the donation."We'll definitely put it to use," Higgins said.
The donation was so much fun, the children may continue the new tradition again next year."I hope so. I like doing this," said 11-year-old Tori Buechler.
